District Newsletter: April 2024

Assemblymember Rubio

Dear Neighbor,

It is my pleasure to represent the 48th Assembly District in the California State Legislature. This term serves as my 8th year as a Legislator in the California State Assembly. It is an honor to serve over 498,000 residents in our district and collaborate with nine cities in the San Gabriel Valley. I am excited to share our 2024 April Newsletter and ensure our communities stay up-to-date with state-related matters.

Young Legislators Program (YLP) – Business Etiquette Course

The Young Legislatures Program had their forth meeting this month at the Glendora Country Club, where we learned the do’s and don’ts of good table manners, professional business etiquette and networking strategies from the leadership of etiquette coach Jules Martinez Hirst. Thank you to all our community leaders who participated in this fun, informative, and beneficial experience. We walk away with skills and graces that will last a lifetime.

AD48 Scholarship Award Winner

A well-deserved congratulations to our very own Brittany Leyva for earning the Frank J. Evans Scholarship. I was thrilled to honor Brittany for her academic achievements and commitment to helping others. Brittany is currently pursuing higher education at Cal Poly Pomona and is a proud Glendora resident. We can’t wait to see what she does next. Go Broncos!

Mt. Sac and the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges Legislative Round Table

Thank you to Mt. Sac and the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges (FACCC) for graciously hosting me at this year’s Legislative Roundtable Discussion. It was an honor to learn from our community college faculty and share a legislative update with our community.

May we continue having fruitful, engaging, and enlightening conversations and promote and cultivate a greater sense of community across the San Gabriel Valley.

What a pleasure it was to speak to our Link Crew students at Sierra Vista High School. Thank you to Ms. Nora Franco for inviting me to share my story and efforts in Sacramento with our youth.

As a lifelong educator, I am proud to learn the ways in which our students model excellence in the 48th district. Go Dons!

Legislative Update

Chair of the Domestic Violence Committee

As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Domestic Violence, I was enthusiastic about co-authoring a vital piece of legislation, SB268, authored by Senator Alvarado-Gil. This bill makes the rape of an intoxicated person a “violent” felony, while current law only recognizes it as a felony. Through this bill, we acknowledge and bring actionable justice to victims of sexual assault. It is our duty to be a voice for the voiceless and protect those who need it most; rape is violence and needs to be prosecuted as such.

Calling our #fighting48th youth! The YWCA- San Gabriel Valley provides supportive services to the vulnerable youth in our community. As a strong advocate for our California foster youth, I encourage our residents to learn more about the various resources offered by the YWCA-San Gabriel Valley and share them with students who may be in need.
