Governor Signs Assemblywoman Rubio’s AB 1625

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Assemblywoman Blanca E. Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) announced that Governor Edmund G. Brown signed Assembly Bill 1625, legislation to protect consumers from receiving unjust parking violations at inoperable parking meters and payment kiosks in cities and counties.

“The practice of unfairly exacting fines on residents stops with this measure,” said Rubio. “This common-sense bill provides incentives for the repair of these inoperable meters and kiosks rather than allowing the much needed parking spots to be banned in highly congested areas.”

In 2013, AB 61 (Gatto) temporarily banned the practice of prohibiting parking in spaces with broken meters, but reached its sunset on January 1, 2017. This bill extends relief to motorists indefinitely. Prior to the passage of the 2013 bill, drivers receiving tickets at broken meters in Los Angeles alone was estimated at 17,000 annually.

The 48th Assembly District, is comprised of the cities of Azusa, Baldwin Park, Bradbury, City of Industry, Covina, Duarte, El Monte, Glendora, Irwindale, Monrovia, West Covina, and the San Gabriel Valley unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County, including Bassett, Charter Oak, Citrus, East Arcadia, Ramona, Valinda and West La Puente.
