Rubio Report - An Update from
the 48th Assembly District
In the District
In early May, I hosted a Workforce Development Roundtable co-sponsored by Citrus College and Southern California Gas Company. We had a great turnout from our local community colleges, universities, superintendents and business leaders who have a vested interest in Career Technical Education (CTE). Attendees discussed regional workforce needs, and existing and potential programs to help close the skills-gap and prepare students to emerge as competitors for high-wage, high-demand careers. Governor Brown's current budget proposes an increase of $200 million from the Prop 98 General Fund to help CTE programs aligned with needed industry skills.

Graduation season is upon us, and one of the many honors I have as a legislator is being invited to address graduating students. This year, I spoke to a group of young, ambitious and talented students graduating from Cal State L.A. with a degree in Criminal Justice. I was able to offer them words of encouragement and advice from my work on the Public Safety Committee. It is my hope that my message of commitment and perseverance stays with them as they continue into their chosen fields.

A few other events I had the opportunity to attend in the district during the month of May were the Azusa Pacific University Graduation, where my district office intern graduated with her Bachelors in Social Work. I visited the California Metals Coalition, where I was the keynote speaker, the Broken Soldiers Veterans Community Awards, and the Covina Sunrise 25th Annual Fundraiser.
Around the Capitol
This year has certainly been eventful in Sacramento. I was proud to host a group of constituents on the Assembly Floor for the Pacific Water Quality Association Lobby Day. As a former Water Board Member, I know the importance of connecting with state and local officials so that we can stay up to date with the needs of our district.

I also had the pleasure of speaking to a crowd of domestic violence advocates who were in Sacramento to support a $50 million budget ask to provide support and services to domestic violence survivors. This issue is extremely important to me, as I am Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Domestic Violence.

One accomplishment that I was proud of this year was when I was a Legislative Sponsor for the Democrats vs. Republicans soccer match. The match serves as a fundraiser for local charities (WEAVE and the Sacramento Food Bank). The fundraiser was a huge success, as we helped raise over $50,000 for these charities.

Finally, I am happy to announce that 21 of my bills have passed through the Assembly and are now heading over to the Senate. My legislative priorities this year include: foster children, homeless youth, services for domestic violence survivors and water. So far, we are doing very well and I look forward to continuing the fight for my constituents in the San Gabriel Valley.

As always, it is a pleasure to be of service.
