District Newsletter: April 2025

Assemblymember Rubio

Happy May to you all. I hope you get to try something new this month; find laughter and joy, and even learn something new!

It is my pleasure to represent the 48th Assembly District in the California State Legislature. This term serves as my 9th year as a Legislator in the California State Assembly. It is an honor to serve over 498,000 residents in our district and collaborate with nine cities in the San Gabriel Valley. I am excited to share our April 2025 Newsletter and ensure our communities stay up-to-date with state-related matters.

District Updates

Redwood Elementary 12th Annual College Career Day
redwood elementary

This month, Redwood Elementary hosted its 12th Annual College Career Day, a school where I used to teach! Here, I was able to reconnect with old friends, share my story with 5th-grade students, and even reunite with some students I taught in 4th grade. Thank you for having me, Redwood, and congratulations on celebrating your 75th anniversary.

Baldwin Park Unified School District Showcase
BP unified showcase

Please congratulate our students from Baldwin Park Unified School District, who performed at the BPUSD Showcase this weekend. It was amazing to see the incredible talent and impressive performances from various schools throughout BPUSD. Congratulations to the boys and girls cross-country, soccer, basketball, cheerleading, and wrestling teams for winning this year's league championships. We are so impressed by their dedication and the talent required to represent our community at both the local and national levels. Keep up the great work, and cheers to another successful year!

Young Legislators Program
YLP Policy P

A big round of applause for our Young Legislators who completed their fourth event this month! Our cohort learned lots from our regional leaders at this year’s Policy Panel.

A special thank you to Mayor Cesar Garcia for moderating the panel and hosting our students in the beautiful City of Duarte. Our panelists for this event included: Yoko Igawa, Elizabeth Martinez, and Joe Cina. They left our students with nuggets of useful knowledge, while they consider their future endeavors beyond high school. We are so grateful for your participation and are so excited for next year.

Legislative Updates

Committee hearings are still in abundance around the Capitol as bills continue to be discussed and shared publicly, amended, and given their respective price tag. Bills that have been successful in their first, second, and third reading in the assembly (which is when they get presented on the assembly floor) then head to the senate to repeat the same process, being heard in committees, discussed, and voted on.

As a member of several committees: Aging and Long Term Care, Banking and Finance, Communications and Conveyance, and Local Government, and as the Chair of Governmental Organization, there is hardly a dull moment or a time when I am not learning something. Staff, consultants, and members are working hard to get bills in good spots and are having thoughtful conversations to produce meaningful legislation and make positive changes in this state.

Legislation in our office is almost all on its way to its third reading or has been transferred to the Senate side. Stay tuned!

Yom Hashoah (Holocaust) Floor Ceremony

As we wrapped up April, the Legislature honored the families and survivors of the Holocaust. I had the privilege of recognizing a truly admirable and strong-spirited woman, Ruchell Zicherman, who was taken to Auschwitz at 14 and survived despite the horror of the experience. Ruchell moves through her life with faith, with grace and positivity- a beacon for us all and the reminder of what we are capable of. It was such a privilege. Thank you to Ruchell for the opportunity to meet you and introduce you to the California State Assembly.
