A warm hello, wishing the best and safest summer season for you all,
It is my pleasure to represent the 48th Assembly District in the California State Legislature. This term serves as my 8th year as a Legislator in the California State Assembly. It is an honor to serve over 498,000 residents in our district and collaborate with nine cities in the San Gabriel Valley. I am excited to share our 2024 June Newsletter and ensure our communities stay up-to-date with state-related matters.
Young Legislators Program
Our Young Legislators had their culminating experience this month at the State Capitol, where they witnessed the application of government work on the legislative and statewide sides. It was so much fun to introduce them to a new city, show them around the Capitol, and give them the inside scoop on our work here. A gracious thank you to my colleagues and staff who helped make this experience meaningful and memorable.
Happenings around the Capitol
California Women Lead Capitol Fellows Scholarship Breakfast
I am so proud of the 41 hardworking, bright, and capable women for whom we were able to raise scholarship money and celebrate at the California Women Lead Scholarship event. At this event, fellows received scholarship money for their efforts and achievements in their respective political offices across California. It was deeply rewarding to share my story and hear from other women who have made great strides in their professional lives. What was made clear in this event is the success that arises amongst women who support and uplift one another throughout their life journey. Congratulations to this year's fellows, and best of luck along your path.
California Non-Profit of the Year
I was delighted to award Monrovia Reads as our California Nonprofit of the Year award winner.
Monrovia Reads is an incredible venture that seeks to bring literacy and empowerment around reading to every school in Monrovia with its Mobile Literacy Van. The Mobile Literacy Van is a magical space full of books for children to read and keep. Monrovia Reads’ philosophy is that a book in the hands of a child is the gift that keeps on giving, something that can enhance a personal library and be shared amongst siblings, friends, and family members. Not only does Monrovia Reads distribute books and ignite reading passions, but they also bring along activities, story time, and after-school tutoring. Thank you, Monrovia Reads, for bringing such a kind-spirited, fun, and forward-thinking program to our community’s students. We are truly better because of you.
FYI
July is Independent Retailer Month, where we are all encouraged to shop at independent retailers. They help promote social connection and community engagement and provide positive economic impacts locally and beyond. Be sure to check out some independent retailers in your area or along your summer travels!
Legislative Update
The Capitol was abuzz this month with the same six-letter word that gets used in our own homes, “budget.” Much of the month was gauged toward hearing final arguments, having final hearings, and making decisions on what bills would make the cut this year. Much effort was made on every level- activists, constituents, lobbyists, advocates, elected officials, and staff - all of whom were championing a goal of theirs.
Our office is pleased to have our first bill on its way to the Governor’s desk for signing. AB 2213, which went through the legislative process in its entirety. This bill would allow the County’s five oversight boards to update its borders to align with the borders of the board of supervisors’ districts “as those district boundaries are determined and adjusted by the Citizens Redistricting Commission…”
Intern Spotlight
We were glad to have Sonya Turoff in our Capitol Office this month. Sonya, a high school student and 15 years old, came in bright, eager, and ready for whatever came her way. She has been diligent, focused, and a great team player. Sonya will undoubtedly succeed in any area of life she chooses to engage in; she is compassionate, friendly, and curious. She has a great work ethic and a natural willingness to do well for herself and support those around her. Thank you, Sonya, for making a natural and positive complement to our office.
Just a Note
As we part ways with June, I want to extend a congratulations to our graduates from kindergarten through college. A warm thank you to the teachers and faculty across the state who have made this a successful and productive academic year. Congratulations to anyone retiring, best of luck on your new chapter in life, and thank you for the work you have done to build our future adults through an advancement in their education. I hope all families will find ways to stay cool, well rested, and have some fun this summer season. Stay safe and stay hydrated!
Additionally, resources for summer meals for school children can be found on the California Department of Education website.
