District Newsletter: September 2023

Assemblymember Rubio

Greetings everyone,

It is my pleasure to represent the 48th Assembly District in the California State Legislature. This term will serve as my 7th year as a Legislator in the California State Assembly. It is an honor to serve over 498,000 residents in our district and collaborate with nine cities in the San Gabriel Valley. I am excited to share our 2023 September Newsletter and ensure our communities stay up-to-date with state-related matters.

Assemblywoman Rubio Secures Funding for AD 48 School District

I was pleased to congratulate Covina-Valley Unified School District and Fairvalley High School on receiving the Barona Band of Mission Indians’ 2023 Education Grant for the #fighting48th!

This was a very competitive process, and each application was carefully considered. We thank our school districts across the 48th Assembly District for applying and promoting the retention of our students in academia. May we continue collaborating with our local leaders and educators to empower our students in the San Gabriel Valley. I look forward to hearing about the success of Fairvalley’s College and Career Application Center. Go Falcons!

In partnership with the California Legislative Women's Caucus, I was honored to recognize five nonprofit organizations with a small token of appreciation. From visiting various Women’s Clubs to touring Maryvale’s facility, we thank our outstanding organizations in the 48th Assembly District for their commitment to supporting our families in the community. As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Domestic Violence, I will continue to advocate for our vulnerable populations and ensure our residents experience a greater quality of life.

Assemblywoman Rubio’s Annual Appointments Training Workshop

I was overjoyed to host our Annual Appointments Training Workshop in the City of Duarte.

Our residents heard from state/local appointees and were provided insight into the application process. They learned about the resources and tools available to become our next appointees in the State of California. Thank you to California Women Lead Sabrina Ashjian, Vanessa Delgado, and Rosie Richardson for sharing their experiences and inspiring us with their passion for public service.

Azusa Field of Glory Ceremony

This year marks the 22nd Anniversary of 9/11. It is vital that we pay tribute to those who lost their lives during this horrific time in history. Thank you to the City of Azusa and Rotary Club of Azusa for commemorating our first responders, service members, veterans, and local heroes at the Field of Glory Ceremony. These outstanding individuals play a pivotal role in the safety of our communities. May we always remember those who sacrificed for our freedom in this country.

AD48 Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations

West Covina residents, local leaders, and I were proud to celebrate the Greater West Covina Business Association’s First Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.

I appreciate their commitment to strengthening our cultural ties and creating fun-filled activities for our children and families in the San Gabriel Valley.

Legislative Update

The California State Assembly adjourned on September 14. Now, all the bills, which passed through the legislative process, have until October 14 to be signed by the Governor. I sent eight bills to the Governor’s desk, three of which have already been signed.

Highlights from this legislative year include managing SB 14 for Senator Grove and SB 331 for Senator Rubio. SB 14 will classify sex trafficking of a minor as a serious crime and place protections for victims of human trafficking. This bill had over 60 co-authors and initially failed in the Assembly Committee on Public Safety. Thanks to the hard work of the Author, Governor, and Speaker, SB 14 was re-heard and signed into law.

During the last week of session, I presented SB 331 on behalf of Senator Rubio. Known as Piqui’s law, this has been three years in the making and will provide detailed trainings on domestic violence and child abuse for judges, attorneys, mediators, and everyone involved in domestic violence and child custody matters. It was a privilege to pass this bill with Piqui’s mother, Ana Estevez (pictured below), in the Assembly gallery. I am excited to return to Sacramento in early January and continue fighting for the 48th Assembly District.
