Protecting families and children is key to creating a healthy society. SB 331, Piqui’s law, is a critical bill that ensures children's safety from family violence.
Piqui’s Law, is named after a 5-year-old boy tragically murdered in 2017 by his father during an unsupervised court ordered visitation. This is unacceptable, especially in circumstances where the protective parent, like Piqui’s mother Ana Estevez, pleaded with the court for full custody and supervised visitation, knowing her child was in danger. In response, Piqui’s Law strengthens protections for children, including banning the practice of court ordered reunification programs, which may have harmful impacts on children. In addition, the bill strengthens training and reporting requirements for judicial personnel on issues of domestic violence and child abuse. Watch this video to learn about more about Piqui’s Law:
The work does not stop here and we will not stop fighting for those little voices who need us the most.
